قال أبو جعفر: وأولى القولين في ذلك بالصواب، قولُ ابن عباس, لأن الله جل ثناؤه عمَّ بقوله: (ما كانوا ليؤمنوا)، القوم الذين تقدّم ذكرهم في قوله: وَأَقْسَمُوا بِاللَّهِ جَهْدَ أَيْمَانِهِمْ لَئِنْ جَاءَتْهُمْ آيَةٌ لَيُؤْمِنُنَّ بِهَا .
